Is Chamomile Tea Good For You?

Is Chamomile Tea Good For You?

Who doesn’t love a wonderful mug of chamomile tea?

When you open up the bag and the magical scent of chamomile fills your nose, it instantly takes you back to those spring and summer months.

It only gets better from there, taking your favourite tea scoop and pulling out a pile of those pretty little flowers, dropping them into a teapot, and pouring hot water over them. If you thought, they smelt heavenly in the bag just wait until they have started steeping in the water. It is truly an indulgent experience.

Anyway, back to the question at hand, is chamomile tea good for you?

Of course, it is, I mean come on, can something that is 100% natural, smells this good, and tastes amazing really be bad for you?

So, what makes chamomile tea good for you?

Reduce Menstrual Pain

Chamomile tea has been shown, through multiple studies, to help reduce the severity of menstrual cramps. Having a consistent intake for around a month has been shown to have a positive impact on cramps and inflammation.

It does this through the anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic effects of the tea. This helps to relax the muscles and reduce inflammation, in turn, this will reduce the severity of cramping.

It also helps to relieve the stress and anxiety that can comes with period pain.

Treat Diabetes and Lower Blood Sugar

It has been shown that chamomile tea is a brilliant supplement to other diabetic treatments and can aid in the reduction of blood sugar levels. It has also been shown that consistent consumption can prevent your blood sugar level from increasing, which in turn can aid in the prevention of diabetes.

Slowing or Preventing Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is, in simple terms, the progressive loss of bone density. While anyone can potentially end up with osteoporosis, it is most commonly linked to post-menopausal women. It is believed that this is due to the effects of estrogen.

A study in 2004, highlighted that chamomile tea may have anti-estrogen effects and could also promote healthy bone density. The author of the study did however state that more research in this is needed to be certain.

Aids in Sleep

Chamomile tea is widely known for being an aid to healthy sleep and relaxation. This, however, has very little in the way of clinical studies to prove it.

That said, when I feel like I need some help to relax and wind down before bed, I reach for the chamomile tea, and it always helps. I wake up refreshed and always feel like I have slept well, placebo or not, if it makes you feel better then it makes you feel better.

Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Chamomile has been linked to helping reduce stress and anxiety. It does this in the same way it helps with sleep and relaxation. Sure, it's not as strong as pharmaceutical drugs used for the same thing but for those looking for a natural aid it's perfect.

Yes, there may be a little of the placebo effect in there but that is certainly not the whole story. There have been placebo-controlled studies on the benefits of the use of chamomile. They have found that the power of chamomile is much more than just a placebo.

Who should avoid Chamomile Tea?

If you are someone who has severe allergic reactions to pollen or have previously had an allergic reaction to chamomile, then you should really find another option. We would suggest that you try peppermint tea, it shares many of the benefits of chamomile without the potential for pollen in your tea.

We also recommend that you don’t give your infants chamomile, it is a flower and with that has the potential to be contaminated with botulism. This is normally not an issue; most healthy individuals have a strong enough immune system to prevent this. Infants on the other hand may end up having a harder time fighting it off.
